7 Simple Rituals That Strengthen Long-Distance Friendships
Keeping a friendship strong when you’re miles apart isn’t about luck—it’s about consistently showing up, even when life gets busy. Here’s how I keep my closest friendships thriving and genuinely enjoyable, despite the distance.
Morning Yap Sessions
Every single morning, my best friend Julie and I hop on a call, though she affectionately calls it our “morning meeting.” Let’s be real, these aren’t quick check-ins. Our calls easily last an hour or more, filled with everything from parenting wins (and fails) to business brainstorms and hilarious mishaps.
Lately, a big feature of our calls is “Dunkin Drake.” Julie religiously gets her daily coffee fix from Dunkin’, and her regular barista is practically Drake’s doppelgänger. He always seems startled by Julie’s minor disasters, like that rogue curb that “jumps out of nowhere” or her spontaneous drink order changes that visibly confuse him. And yes, Julie’s infamous gym trips often come up, like the time she drove there, parked, reconsidered every life choice, and then promptly left. These quirky morning chats set a great tone for the rest of our days.
Family Integration
My best friends aren’t just friends, they’re family. The kids lovingly call Julie “Aunt Larry.” That nickname started years ago when we were younger and going out more often. We jokingly used fake names when meeting new people, Anastasia, Rhonda, and Larry, and Larry just stuck. We proudly became known as “the Larrys.”
What I value most is how naturally Julie has become a trusted part of our family, even from twelve hours away. The boys know they can always turn to Aunt Larry, or even my husband’s best friend, for advice or just to talk things out. Building these relationships didn’t take effort, it just took consistently inviting Julie into our daily routines.
Sharing Goals and Dreams
Julie isn’t just my go-to for funny stories; she’s my trusted sounding board for everything important. When she started her cleaning company, we discussed it in detail, celebrating every milestone together. Likewise, she’s been integral as I launch my membership, navigate buying a home, and talk through family decisions.
Having a friend who knows your goals and genuinely supports them is powerful. Julie and I have become each other’s cheerleaders, accountability partners, and occasional therapists. Her encouragement and honesty help keep me grounded and motivated.

Making Trips a Priority
While daily calls are essential, face-to-face time is unbeatable. We prioritize getting together whenever possible. This summer, I’m heading to New Jersey to spend two weeks with Julie. I can’t wait for beach days, baby snuggles with my niece, and storytime on the couch. We’ve already got mandatory stops planned: Sam’s Pizza in Wildwood, ice cream at Custard Hut, margaritas with her mom, and definitely some sushi.
Speaking of sushi, it brings up one of our favorite jokes. The night I met Julie’s husband, we saved sushi leftovers in the fridge. He ate our leftover sushi at 2 AM, covered it in ranch dressing, and still hasn’t lived it down. These shared moments and inside jokes keep our friendship rich and full of laughter.
Small but Thoughtful Gestures
Small gestures mean so much in long-distance friendships. It might be sending Julie something random from Amazon just because it reminded me of her. Recently, Julie returned the gesture by sending her husband on a mission to get a special family heirloom for me before my visit. These thoughtful actions remind us both that distance doesn’t weaken our bond.

Celebrating Special Occasions Together
We never miss celebrating special occasions, even from afar. Birthdays, promotions, anniversaries, we acknowledge them all. Sometimes it’s as simple as a heartfelt call; other times, it’s a surprise gift or a virtual hangout. These celebrations ensure no one ever feels overlooked or forgotten.
Friendship as Priority
The key to maintaining a strong long-distance friendship is prioritizing it. Daily conversations, genuine family connections, sharing big dreams, and regular visits ensure our friendship stays close. Julie is more than a daily conversation partner, she’s a constant in my life because we both intentionally nurture our friendship. Without this mutual commitment, I’d genuinely feel lost.
Keeping friendships alive despite distance isn’t complicated. It’s simply about consistently showing up, sharing genuine moments, and making intentional choices, no matter how many miles separate you.
