1 Simple way to make Jesus the focus of easter

While shopping for little eggs for my sons’ classroom Easter egg hunt, I casually mentioned to my husband, “We need plastic eggs for my Jesus lesson.” He looked at me, laughed, and shook his head. “Extra?” I asked.

He smiled. “No, you’re just a caring mama.”

And that’s exactly it. In our home, Easter isn’t just about pastel-colored eggs and chocolate bunnies. It’s about Jesus, His sacrifice, and the love of a God who redeemed us all.

If you’re looking for a simple yet meaningful way to teach your kids about the true message of Easter, this Christ-centered egg hunt is a powerful hands-on lesson that walks through Holy Week and the resurrection of Jesus.

What Easter Really Means

For our family, Easter is a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection—the fulfillment of the prophecy in Isaiah 53 and the cornerstone of our faith.

As we prepare our hearts for Easter, we also take part in Lent, a season of repentance and spiritual renewal. This year has been one of realignment and reflection, as we’ve sought God’s direction for our lives. (More on that soon—big changes are ahead!)

But through it all, our focus remains on Christ, and that’s what we want to instill in our children.

So, instead of filling their Easter baskets with just toys and candy, we’re leading them through a special Holy Week egg hunt—one that tells the greatest story ever told.

A Christ-Centered Easter Egg Hunt

On Easter morning, before heading to church, our boys will search for 12 eggs, each containing a small item that represents a part of Jesus’ journey to the cross, His sacrifice, and His victory over death.

Once all the eggs are found, we’ll sit down together, open them in order, and walk through the scriptures that tell the Easter story.

Here’s how you can do the same:

How to Teach Your Kids This Lesson

1️⃣ Let them find all the eggs first. This builds excitement and makes the lesson feel interactive.
2️⃣ Sit down as a family and open each egg in order. Read the scripture and explain what happened to Jesus.
3️⃣ Pause after Egg #12. Ask your kids: “What does this mean for us?” Help them understand that because Jesus rose from the dead, we have hope, forgiveness, and eternal life.
4️⃣ Pray together. Thank Jesus for His sacrifice and celebrate His resurrection.

Making Jesus the Focus of Easter

It’s not hard to keep Jesus at the center of Easter—without Him, there would be no reason to celebrate at all!

Beyond this egg hunt, we’ve also been watching faith-based Easter movies on PureFlix, reading the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ resurrection, and using Lent as a time to reflect and grow spiritually.

This Easter, I encourage you to find small ways to weave Christ into your celebrations. Whether it’s through a resurrection egg hunt, reading scripture as a family, or simply pausing to reflect on the gift of salvation, the focus is the same—Jesus is alive, and that changes everything.
